I no longer have a Windows partition, so I am trying to play Guild Wars using Wine. It's technically running, but incredibly slowly (too slow to actual play), and half the screen is black with random color splotches.

I don't have hardly any experience with command line, and I really just don't know what I am doing. haha

I don't know whether the problem is with the Guild Wars settings, or if it is the video card, or the memory or what. It's all the same as what I used in Windows, but maybe those things just don't have good Linux drivers? I don't know!

If there is anyone who could maybe possibly help in any way, I would greatly appreciate it!

Also, on a side note, does anyone who uses the Firefox browser have problems viewing the official GW website? Whenever I go, I can't read most of the page, because the background covers the foreground...

*Update: Okay, it seems to have totally stopped working now. It kind of went back and forth between color and black-n-white for a little bit, during which it was unplayable. When minimized, it pretty much refused to unminize. I had to eventually use force quit on it. 8/

Here's something to try:

run "regedit" from a terminal, and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D (if any of these items don't exist, create them by right-clicking on the folder it should be in and selecting new -> key).

Then, on the right side of the window right-click and do new -> string value. Name it "UseGLSL" and set it to "disabled" (right click on it and select "modify", then type disabled). When GLSL is enabled GW runs a lot slower, so we don't want that.

Then, to be able to restore it after you minimize, run "winecfg" from a terminal and under the applications tab set windows version to 2000.

I also used to have the GW website problem, but I use flashblock to stop flash content from loading, and that solved it. For some reason the flash stuff was covering the text.

I am not sure that I did the first part quite right...

Okay...I had a window pull up, divided into two panes...
In the left pane, is the folder HKEY..etc. I clicked on it, which led to the Software, then the Wine folders.

The Wine folder did not have a Direct3D folder in it, so I right-clicked on the temp folder and told it to add a new -> key and named it Direct3D. It did not add a folder or anything in the temp folder called Direct3D...it added Direct3D to the right pane under temp. Was this correct?

I then right-clicked on the right pane like you said to and did the UseGLSL.

I am going to try running the game again and see what happens...

Oh, and I added the Flackblock add-on, and the website works much better now. Thanks. 8)

you wanted to right click on Wine, then make the new key so that Direct3D is a subdirectory of Wine, then add GLSL to Direct3D

Wait...I think I just figured it out... I was clicking on new -> string value instead of new -> key...

Now I have a Direct3D folder within the Wine folder.

**Okay, I started it up again, and it looks much much better now. No black with random color splotches and it's not running so sluggishly, at the moment at least. Still not running great, but a good sight better than it was. Thank you very much.

Query: What's your video card? I ask because ATI's linux drivers are renowned for sucking ass. I've heard you pretty much need an Nvidia card to play GW on linux.

they're still better than ati's vista drivers

i'm trying to work on this as well. now guild wars is running fine on the latest wine version. my laptop has the proper hardware to run it. but the only error i get is that i cannot connect!!!
there are instances where it would work and others where it won't work. i haven't been able to get fully into the game 'cause of the long download from where i left my character last time. but if i quit and try again i get the same error message: cannot connect to arenanet.

also, i tried forwarding the ports in the firewall for the laptop/wireless connection and nothing.

if anyone can help me who has had or knows of this problem please lemme know. i'll keep a watch over the thread.
